Whole Foods to label genetically modified food

ATLANTA -

Do you like your food with or without GMOs? It stands for Genetically Modified Organisms, and chances are you eat quite a bit of them.

If you're in Whole Foods and you want organic, you don't have far to look. All you have to do is look for a yellow band.

"Whether it's cauliflower there or apples or oranges, we make a great effort to label things as organic," said Stephen Corradini with Whole Foods Market.

But in a move many are calling bold, Whole Foods Market announced that by the year 2018, they'll not only label all their organic products, but they'll clearly label all products that contain GMOs.

"We will label wall to wall, soup to nuts," said Corradini.

Here's how GMOs work. DNA is taken from other species to create new plants that are stronger, resistant to herbicides, drought, and healthier. Most corn, soybeans, sugar beets and canola crops grown in the world are likely to be genetically modified, which means GMOs are in about 80 percent of all processed foods.

While farmers and scientists praise the biotechnology, Whole Foods is not quite convinced.

"The jury is still out on the scientific research behind it. But we believe that transparency is really the best first step, so that customers can choose for themselves what they believe is best for themselves," said Corradini.

Why doesn't the government require GMO labeling? The FDA classifies GMOs as safe and says special labeling isn't necessary. The American Medical Association agrees, saying that labeling is misleading and will falsely alarm consumers.

"We believe that fundamentally that quality and transparency are linked, and that customers have the right to know what's in their food and the right to choose for themselves and their families what they think is best," Corradini said.

This science is expanding, and the FDA is expected to approve the first genetically modified animal – salmon -- which is being altered to grow bigger and faster. For more information, click here!
