Northern Illinois University has seen an 11% increase in applications for this coming fall semester.

The Daily Chronicle reports that the school has received more than 18,000 applications from students who want to be in the freshman class. That's 11% more than the school received at this time last year and the most NIU has ever received by this time. The school has a program called Vision 2020 that aims to increase freshman enrollment to about 3,400 students by the year 2020.

The program also aims to increase academic standards. It has a goal of increasing incoming freshmen's average ACT score from 21 to 23. The DeKalb school also wants more students who finished in the top 25% of their high school classes.
