Rutgers Students, Former Player React To Firing Of Mike Rice

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -

Some Rutgers University students on Wednesday called the video that surfaced of now former men's basketball coach Mike Rice "sad."

FOX 29 spoke with students around campus Wednesday after the university announced it had fired the coach.

The decision comes after practice video, aired on ESPN's "Outside the Lines," showed the coach throw basketballs at players and yell slurs at them.

"It's sad, honestly, it disgusted me because, how do you do that to your own players? Rutgers freshman Daniel Ioselevich asked.

Senior Darren Ross said what was seen on the video was really bad.

While some students were angered by the video, a former player said it only shows the coach's worst moments.

"If this was like any program in the country, if you go through hours of footage, you are going to find things in a two minute video that will look bad," Sean Bannon told FOX 29's Claudia Gomez.

Troy Stevenson of Garden State Equality wonders how the university didn't immediately act when it first saw the video. The Associated Press reports a copy of the video was given to Scarlet Knights athletic director Tim Pernetti in late November by a former employee. The video resulted in the suspension of Rice for three games, a fine and anger management classes, according to the AP report.

"The question has to be answered, how can they see that video that we've all seen now and not immediately act upon it?" Stevenson said.

Members of Garden State Equality are calling for an independent investigation into how the university made its original decision to keep Rice. The group says it wants the investigation to reach as high as the university president himself.
