TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - A Phoenix-based civil rights group has complained that the Maricopa County Community College District has discriminated against immigrant students participating in the federal government's program that defers deportations.

According to the Civil Rights Center, the district required information on citizenship of parents of students enrolling in the district's charter high schools. The group says that discriminatorily discourages students from enrolling.

A district spokesman says it's unclear that information actually was sought.

Tom Gariepy says it's against district policies to ask charter school students about immigration status but that he can't state categorically it never happened.

He says the district is taking steps to address the issue.
