Nonprofit aims to alleviate problem of stray dogs on Mexico streets

PHOENIX -

She's a valley woman with a warm spot for animals. She regularly travels between two countries, helping to keep stray dogs off the street.

Ariadna Zavala was on vacation in Rocky Point, Mexico when she noticed the large number of stray dogs roaming the streets.

She says Rocky Point is supposed to be a happy tourism spot -- but it made her sad to see all of the dogs hungry and without homes, so she decided to make a difference.

"I would go to the supermarket or something and see a dog on the street and I was like, oh I can't leave him here, so I would take him to my house and that's how we started," says Ariadna Zavala.

Zavala has a daytime job -- but started Pet Effect Inc. to keep animals off the streets of Rocky Point.

Every Friday after work, Zavala travels from the valley to Mexico where she has an animal shelter for homeless dogs.

"Well it's just amazing. When you find them you can see that they are completely afraid, they don't trust people, they're just in a corner and weeks later, you're giving them love and feeding them. You can see the rehabilitation was just amazing."

Over the past year Zavala has found a permanent home for more than 40 animals.

And Pet Effect Inc. provides more than just shelter -- they also inform people of Rocky Point about the importance of their dogs being spayed and neutered.

"They're just loveable and I mean they're the best thing and it's just very very comforting for me to know that I'm trying to change their life and get them a home," says Zavala.

Pet Effect Inc. was recently accepted as a non-profit organization and they're always looking for volunteers to help keep stray dogs off the street.
