Rutgers commissions Rice video investigation - Fox 2 News Headlines

Gov. Christie supports Rutgers president amid video scandal

Posted: Updated:

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Rutgers University is commissioning an independent investigation of the conduct of former men's basketball coach Mike Rice and the way the school handled the situation.

Rice was fired last week after a video that showed him pushing and kicking players and spewing gay slurs at them during practices between 2010 and last year.

The school's athletic director, top in-house lawyer and an assistant coach also resigned.

Also Monday, the chairman of the university's Board of Governors said that the chairman of the board's committee on athletics saw the video in December.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he still has faith in Rutgers University President Robert Barchi.

But he says basketball coach Mike Rice should have been fired long before a video was aired showing him mistreating players.

Christie answered questions Monday for the first time since Rice was fired and the athletic director resigned.

He says Rice should have been dismissed in November after the university was given a video showing him kicking and shoving players and spewing gay slurs.

He says, "Anybody who saw the video in November should have come to same conclusion."

He says Barchi made a mistake not requesting to see the video himself in November. But he says it was not a firing offense. He says the heads of large institutions need to be able to delegate.
