ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

Lisa Mills knew Michigan guard Tim Hardaway, Junior when he was just a kid.

"My daughter was going through old photos and found photos of she and Tim, his sister and just the kids when they were little, and I thought I should tell everyone how I taught Timmy his basketball skills as they would play in my backyard and in the pool," she said.

Mills said basketball wasn't the game of choice during Hardaway's early years.

"I don't ever recall them really playing basketball.  They were playing soccer, playing in the pool and didn't know he was playing probably until he was in high school."

While Hardaway might be a little more reserved on camera, Mills said she remembers him having a humorous side.

"He's funny, at least he was when he was little.  I (have) seen him on television.  He's very serious.  He speaks very well, and he has a humorous side to him."

While Mills is a Michigan State graduate, she is switching allegiances, at least for tonight.

Mills is the former wife of NBA star Terry Mills, who played on the 1989 championship team for the Wolverines and was teammates with Hardaway's father when they played together for the Miami Heat.
