Students safely evacuated after fire at Savannah school

SAVANNAH, Ga. -

School administrators say a fire forced the evacuation of students at a middle school east of Savannah.

Savannah-Chatham County school officials say the fire broke out Tuesday morning in the attic of Coastal Middle School on Whitemarsh Island. A statement issued by the school system says all students are "accounted for and safe."

The school teaches children in grades six through eight.

Administrators say the evacuated students were taken to nearby elementary and high schools to finish the day. Parents were discouraged from picking them up early.

The extent of fire damage to the middle school was not immediately known.
