Bicyclist hit and killed in Cobb County

Authorities in Marietta have arrested a man they say struck and killed a bicyclist on Wednesday morning.

Marietta police say the incident happened around 5 a.m. in the area long South Marietta Parkway near the Cobb County bus depot. They say the victim, 25-year-old Joseph Gathambiri, was riding his bicycle on his way to work at a nearby Burger King when he was struck and killed.

Authorities said that the driver, 27-year-old Damon Thomas Latuch, kept going after striking Gathambiri.

Co-workers and family members tell FOX 5's Darryl Carver they are devastated by what happened. They say he was hearing-impaired, and was loved by the staff.

"He was a soft heart. He was very hard working and he was very friendly.  He was a people person and so everybody loved him," said Grace Gathambiri, Joseph's sister.

Marietta police arrested Latuch. He is charged with hit-and-run, DUI and vehicular homicide.

Family members say they are grateful that police arrested a suspect, but said they still they continue to mourn the life of a man cut short far too early.

Latuch is being held in the Cobb County Jail while he awaits his first court appearance.
