Mother warns parents of dangers tied to teens and messenger apps

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

A local mom was horrified after finding out her daughter had been posting nude pictures of herself with a new app that made it easy.

A metro Detroit mother discovered something in her daughter's room Monday night, something that made her feel like she did not know her second oldest child at all.

"I felt sick. I felt really sick. I couldn't believe that my teen would do that. I expected more from her," said the mother from Westland, whose name we're leaving out of this story.

Mom was suspicious when "she like hid her iPod, like put it towards her chest."

Mom grabbed it, started searching around and when she clicked on a social networking app called Kik, "What do you see? A bunch of nude pictures of random people, grown men on there."

Her daughter was messaging these men from her smart phone.

"Sexual things like what they want to do to each other, and they were showing their private parts.  They were saying do you want to have sex and everything else to her,"

The mother of six was shocked and appalled and confronted her 15-year-old, reminded her of all the dangers like people who may have cruel and criminal intentions towards kids.

"Not only that, it will ruin your life."

You really cannot be sure who is on the other end of that device. On top of that, nothing prevents the recipient from saving, storing and sharing something you send that you are hoping they keep secret.

"So she had pictures of herself on this?"

"In the shower, everything."

"They see on the news all the time that children get abducted. They meet strangers from the Internet, and obviously they don't care. They just keep doing it and doing it and doing it. So us as parents, we got to be strong and make it to where they can't do it. That's the only way it's going to change is us."

Those who use Kik are supposed to agree not to use Kik Messenger to upload, distribute or otherwise use any user content that is vulgar, obscene or offensive or that contains pornography, nudity or that is harmful to minors in any way.  However, this mom says the real responsibility should be placed on parents.

"We're just basically asking for trouble when we give our children that stuff, and I'm one of those moms that just say okay you want an iphone or an ipod, you give it to them, but not knowing the dangers of all the apps and everything else that are on those things that can jeopardize their lives."

The app claims you must be 17 to enter, but her daughter got in and she is 15. So this mom's message is simple.

"She will never ever have an iPod again," said the mom. "She's going to live a regular, normal teen life with no devices, and that's the way it is."

Just so we are clear, this parent is not saying that Kik is a horrible site, but there are some people doing some horrible things on it. She just thinks parents should check and see what their kids are up to. She did and she's glad.
