Facebook To Track Offline Shopping For New Advertising Plan

Posted: Updated:

Facebook users may soon notice the ads they see every day are eerily accurate. This is because the social network plans to roll out a new tool for advertisers that directly targets users based on what they buy both online and in brick-and-mortar stores.

The Wall Street Journal reports the tool combines what Facebook already knows about people's friends and 'likes' with information from third-party data marketers who track things like loyalty-card programs.

The newspaper says Facebook's efforts are bringing in advertisers like General Motors and Nieman Marcus.

Though the new plan has raised some privacy concerns, Facebook says it isn't using location data to target the ads and it has created a program to make data between itself and its data partners anonymous.
