Massive redevelopment proposed for Old Main Post Office

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The new owner of Chicago's old main post office has some big plans for the massive building.

Bill Davies wants to turn the building into a residential complex with a parking structure. It sits alongside the Chicago River and straddles the Eisenhower Expressway.

The new edifice would be a complex of more than 5 million square feet, and would be designed to be the centerpiece for surrounding hotels, stores and offices.

The cost for the project is estimated at $1.2 billion.

The proposal was presented Tuesday night at a community meeting.

The building has been vacant since 1996.
