NOVI, Mich. (WJBK) -

A local elementary school principal is suspended.  She is accused of drinking on her lunch break.

"We received a 911 call advising us of a [motorist] driving erratically," said Novi Police Lieutenant Eric Zinser.  "The driver was arrested."

Principal Kim Warren was arrested at her own school.  Police say she was drunk in her car parked at Deerfield Elementary in the middle of the day.

"She had been in the building that morning.  There had been no sign that anything was wrong.  She then left the building to go to lunch to pick up a couple of things, and it was upon her return that she made a horrible decision," said Novi Community Schools Superintendent Steve Matthews.

"She's deeply regretful for what's happened.  She understands that it was a horrible decision.  She will not be back in that school for a long time, if ever."

The 44-year-old mother of three was placed on immediate paid leave and could face charges.

"I felt horrible for Miss Warren.  It has to be a terrible thing to go through.  I was angry at her for putting herself in this situation, but also the district and that school in this situation," Matthews said.

Classes at Deerfield Elementary are dismissed at 3:50 p.m. and recess was over, so Principal Warren never came into contact with any students, parents or staff, but the superintendent said that is beside the point.

"I can say nobody was at risk, but that's an inaccurate statement.  Her just driving at all put people at risk," said Matthews.

The next step is a review by the Novi city prosecutor.  Charges could be filed this week.

Fox 2 also reached out to Principal Warren for comment.  So far our calls have not be returned.
