New technology from Cellcontrol could save your teen driver's life – or even your own.
The Illinois tech company teamed up with Allstate's Esurance to develop a product that blocks certain cell phone functions inside a moving vehicle, to put an end to texting while driving.
The number of people who use a mobile device while driving has grown substantially. Cellcontrol cites recent statistics that show teen driving deaths are up 19% and those using their phones in the car are four times more likely to get into an accident.
Kevin Coppolino, Cellcontrol's Vice President of corporate development, showed Good Day Chicago how the device works at the Hyatt Regency on Thursday, in a standard SUV. He also described the technology's safeguards, should a driver try to remove it.
Cellcontrol came up with this system in an effort to encourage safe driving practices in those who've just gotten behind the wheel and decrease the number of accidents attributed to distracted driving.
This is the first time a major insurance company has offered teenage policyholders a tool to curb distracted driving. Young Allstate/Esurance customers will receive the Cellcontrol device free of charge.
