Little Girl Left in Hot Car as Father Goes to Class

Posted: Updated:
Newark, DE -

Now that the temperatures are warming up again, a reminder not to leave your children or your pets inside a parked car without air conditioning. Earlier this week, that's exactly what a father did, and it almost turned deadly for his young daughter.

32-year-old Rafig Gurbanzada must be a reasonably smart guy, since he's a graduate student at the University of Delaware. But police say he wasn't too bright when he left his three-year-old daughter alone inside his vehicle Tuesday, as it sat parked on College Avenue in Newark, Delaware.

"The baby had been asleep in the car," Lt. Mark Farrall of the Newark Police Department explained. "He left the baby asleep while he went to class," with the car windows barely cracked and no air conditioning, on a day when the temperature climbed into the 80's.

"A woman who was walking heard the sounds of a baby crying," Lt. Farrall told Fox 29. "She then noticed there was a baby in a vehicle, no adults around. The baby was in the vehicle by herself crying and banging on the window."

Police say the child had been in the car for 45 minutes as it sat in the hot sun, before the good Samaritan found her. "The lady was able to explain to the child how to unlock the door so they could open the door," Lt. Farrall said. She then flagged down Robey Newsom and his son, as they toured the campus, and asked them to call police. "The little girl was crying, her hair was matted, she was sweating profusely, and clearly in distress," Newsom told Fox 29.

"I don't think people understand how quickly the temperature can rise inside of a vehicle," Lt. Farrall added. Newsom agreed. "It was a horribly hot day, the windows were barely open, and I feared that little girl would have died."

She is back home with her parents. Her father has been charged with two misdemeanor counts.
