THE JELLYVISION LAB NEEDS INTERACTIVE WRITERS FOR THE ALEX TEAM
Founded by the same folks who created the hit YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® game series, The Jellyvision Lab, Inc. uses Interactive Conversation, a new approach to interactivity we've pioneered, to create virtual teachers, insurance agents, salespeople. . . you name it. Interactive Conversation allows machines to communicate more like people. Not in a creepy robot sort of way, but in a fun, radio/television sort of way.
Rather than use this ability for global domination, Jellyvision has made it our mission to use Interactive Conversation for good-- to create the single most delightful way people can learn about, and make better decisions about, the products and services that impact their health and well-being. To that end, we've created a benefits communication platform, called ALEX® (www.meetalex.com), and he's helping employees make better-informed decisions, without boring them to tears, much to the joy of their employers.
THAT'S LOVELY. . . BUT WHAT'S THE JOB?
We need people who can develop insightful, engaging, and clever communication for our ALEX platform. People who can quickly master a subject area, figure out the best approach, create an outline, and get buy-in from corporate partners and internal stakeholders. Then, there's the writing. . . the content we'll create may include interactive conversations, videos, e-books. . . or whatever communication platform we can dream up next. Throughout, our writers work with visual artists and lead a cross-functional creative team to bring their scripts to life.
More specifically, here are some qualities we're looking for:
First and foremost, you must be a great writer. Great writing is what defines Jellyvision, and it's what makes our products unique. Our writers have an ear for how actual people actually talk in their actual lives. They are master explainers, and can do so in an established voice, while keeping brand guidelines and client goals in mind.
We look for Interactive Writers who can:
• Convey concepts creatively, logically and concisely
• Get inside the minds of their audience
• Understand what's inherently interesting and relevant about whatever they are communicating about
• Dig deep into a number of different subject matter areas related to healthcare and employee benefits. If you like asking questions until you figure out what makes a subject interesting to you--that's the kind of writer we're seeking.
• Learn new software quickly
You should be audio-visually minded.
This job is about writing for the ear, not the page. Most typically, you'll be stringing a voice actor's recorded audio together and complementing it with on-screen text and animation to create a cohesive experience. Any background or dabbling in audio or film editing will come in handy (though it's not required).
You should be able to play well with others.
You're a writer. You like to sit in a quiet, dark room and draft your masterpieces. Or a bustling café and draft your masterpieces. We get it, and we think you're neat. But you'll almost definitely need to talk to some people, and even some clients. That means asking insightful questions and being a good listener, presenting and selling your work to our partners (some of whom sit in boardrooms and wear suits and drive very nice cars), and generally maintaining a stellar relationship with the companies who pay us.
You should have an interest or background in marketing/branding/benefits/corporate communications.
We're looking to mine deep veins of raw, natural talent (meaning you don't need 10 years of paid writing experience on your resume to be considered), but we also want to see that you have a background or interest in communicating with people on behalf of companies. At root, that's what we do: creating products that help companies communicate with their employees. You need to bring the smart, and you need to bring the funny, but what you're bringing those to. . . is benefit communication efforts, so you really need to be interested in that kind of stuff. Or, at least, be ready to find the challenges in this subject matter that are interesting to you.
What other characteristics should you have?
• Charm - You'll work with everyone from corporate partners to subject-matter experts to internal teams, and being friendly, outgoing, and fun to work with will go a long way with everyone.
• Technical aptitude - We won't ask you to set up our wireless network or write code or anything, but you will be using complicated software that you've never used before (because we invented it). Thus, the ability to master new software is a must.
• Speed, efficiency, and the ability to meet deadlines
• Exceptional creativity
• Crazy attention to detail, without being crazy - That is, perfectionists who can meet deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills
• Grace in giving and receiving criticism and feedback
• Last but not least, as we may have mentioned, you should be funny.

INTERESTED? We're asking for 3 items, outlined below. Yeah, we know it's a lot--but we take this process very seriously, and we can't consider your application without each of the following:
1) Your resume.
2) A thoughtful cover letter that outlines how your experience makes you right for this job, and from which we can get a sense of who you are. We weigh cover letters heavily -- especially for writing positions like this one.
3) A writing sample. 250-400 words explaining how our sense of sight works. Here are five qualities we're really looking for:
• Ability to teach and explain using clear, everyday language (imagine speaking to a bright 7th-grader)
• An innate understanding of how to structure a story
• Humor used on task (which means humor used to explain concepts, and not just for the sake of the humor itself). Put another way: don't add funny around an explanation; the explanation should itself be funny.
• Ability to use metaphor and example to explain complicated subjects
• Efficiency (hence, the 250-400 word limit)
Don't write an interactive conversation. We just want to see a couple paragraphs where you explain how the human eye takes in information - you know, 'sight' - in an interesting, engaging way. If it helps, imagine you work for a cool website, targeted at adults, that explains scientific topics to laypeople, and you've been asked to write "The Basics of Sight" or "How We See" or some similarly titled piece. Please submit your cover letter and writing sample as one document where the system requests a cover letter.
