Bob Sirott`s One More Thing about fast food service

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One more thing, aboutfast food service.

These days at McDonald's the big push is on to get franchisees to be friendlier and faster. The Wall Street Journal reports that they're rolling out a new system for taking orders at the golden arches.

Starting soon after placing an order, you'll get a receipt with a number on it. Then, you'll watch for your number to appear on an overhead screen. When it does, you go to the opposite end of the counter and pick up the food. McDonalds says the new system will bring more order to what is sometimes a chaotic method of getting the food.

It also allows them to address the increasing number of complaints they're getting related to friendliness issues. The top complaint: rude or unprofessional employees. With this new system, the employee who delivers the food at the end of the counter is supposed to say "thank you, come again."

By the way, the top friendliness rating in the industry belongs to Chick-fil-A. To be fair here, with 14,000 restaurants in the U.S., McDonalds is going to have their fair share of complaints. It's kind of hard to control all those employees. But, maybe the McDonalds executives at corporate headquarters in Oak Brook should start studying those successful fast food spots in the area that have the friendly owners who know customers' names--and keep employees for a long time: Chicago hot dog stands.
