Overbrook HS Student Gunned Down Day Before Birthday Dinner

PHILADELPHIA -

"He was a family child," Darshell Scott said as she sat in her living room with family and friends Friday, grieving the loss of her 17-year-old son Bernard, still trying to figure out why such a good-hearted young man is now gone.

"Bernard was a great kid. He was very playful, truly a child at heart," she told FOX 29.

"It's hard right now because he's gone and he's not coming back," said Jamal Ford, a family friend.

Bernard, who was known to his family as BJ, was a sophomore at Overbrook High School. He was at a playground across from the school watching a fight between a kid from school and another teen from 56th and Lansdowne, suddenly guns were drawn and Bernard was caught in the cross fire. Another teen was also shot.

""I'm still really very numb," Darshell Scott said. "You hear about it all the time, but it's very normal to ask so why my child, such a good boy."

"The thing that hurts so bad is that it's so senseless. It was random," Ford told reporters gathered at the family's home in Wynnefield.

Police say they have three young men in custody in connection with the shooting. They recovered one of the guns, a .22 caliber, behind a home on the 1600 block of 60th Street nearby. Next door to one of the suspect's homes.

"Kids nowadays feel like they need guns for protection, from what though," Ford added.

Bernard's mother says her son loved to play video games and hang out with his girlfriend and family. He was supposed to attend his birthday dinner party Friday night, instead his family is left to cope with his murder.

"I'm still trying to understand why," Scott said.

Homicide detectives and the District Attorney's office are still working on the case. No charges have been filed at this point. Ballistics tests are being done on the weapon that was found. Police believe three guns were used in the gun battle.

Extra security was at the school Friday morning and again Friday afternoon when school let out. Counselors were also provided for students and faculty members.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
