Elderly woman attacked in her Phoenix home; suspect search continues

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Police are searching for an accused rapist -- saying he attacked an 89-year-old woman inside her home near 59th Avenue and Thomas Road.

Authorities released a composite sketch of the suspect and they're hoping someone will recognize him and call the police.

The woman's neighbors are upset.

"Who could molest a little 89-year-old lady?  Who could do that?" asked Cliff Laser.

They've seen crime, but nothing like this.

"Heck yeah we want to get the word out.  This guy is a danger to the whole entire area," said Richard Garcia.

Police say the man in the sketch raped the woman.  He twisted off the porch light and knocked on her door at 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

When she came to the door, "He pulls it open, he runs in, he starts trying to rape her," explained Laser.  "And he beat her up really bad."

The woman survived the attack and called the police.

Laser checks in on his neighbor daily.  She lives alone after her daughter recently passed away.

"..you can't open your door to anybody...when she was young, you could do that," he said.

Neighbors are now planning on going door to door, handing out flyers with the sketch.  They say if the rapist could attack an 89-year-old woman, he could attack anyone.

"Maryvale High School is just down the street.  Cartwright Elementary is right here on the corner," said Garcia.

Laser adds, "We hope we find this guy. He's going to hurt somebody else."

If you have any information about this case, call the Phoenix police.
