NJ towns installing lightning detection systems

WOODLAND PARK, N.J. (AP) -- More northern New Jersey towns have installed, or are considering installing, lightning detection systems after recent fatal lightning strikes.

Three people were killed by lightning strikes in New Jersey last year. Two were at the Jersey Shore but one victim was struck while he watched his grandson play soccer in Demarest.

Two teens died in 2006 after being struck on a soccer field in Montville.

The Record reports Wayne, Rutherford, Ridgefield, Dumont and other towns already have systems in place and that Tenafly, Westwood, Emerson and Washington Township are considering

Lightning detection systems typically set off alarms that have been installed at fields and playgrounds. Experts say they're only effective if people are educated about them and know what constitutes a safe shelter.
