Chemical mix forces Lincolnshire hotel evacuation

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Firefighters evacuated a north suburban hotel, including its theatre area, Tuesday morning after some people experienced breathing trouble when two chemicals were mixed in a kitchen area.

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District got a call at 9 a.m. of a hazardous materials incident at the Marriott Lincolnshire at 10 Marriott Drive, district Chief Fred Kruger said.

Fire crews found out that two chemicals had been mixed in a kitchen area, which gave off a gas and some people began to experience breathing trouble, he said.

A HazMat response, which brought an additional four fire departments to the scene, was called and as a precaution, the hotel, including the theatre area, was evacuated while the HazMat team went in and secured the area, Kruger said.

They separated the chemicals, put them into special hazardous materials drums, and ventilated the area.

No one required hospitalization, but paramedics checked four people on the scene, who signed waivers and were released.

About 11:30 a.m., the fire department gave the hotel the OK to resume business for the day and everyone was let back inside.
