Bear makes nightly visits to Dawsonsville home

Posted: Updated:

A roaming black bear has left a woman fearing for her safety in her home in Dawsonsville. Stella Millsapps says the 400-pound unwanted guest has tried to break into her home almost every night.

"It's got into my garbage, it tears my bird feeders down. I have to keep everything in the house on account of it," Millsapps said. "It even tears my bar-be-que grill down."

Georgia is believed to be home to just over 5,000 black bears. In recent years, some have come out of the hilly terrain into the north Atlanta suburbs. The one visiting Millsapps may have traveled from the nearby Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area.

At 81, Millsapps says she just wants to feel safe in her home of 30 years.

"I don't leave nothing out and he still comes. Don't matter what I do," she said.

A spokeswoman for the State Department of National Resources say if the bear is posing a danger, it will be trapped and relocated, but they say if food sources are outside, other bears will likely arrive.

Millsapps' son-in-law said that he was willing to shoot the bear if the state wouldn't act, but the state says it would be forced to cite him if he killed the bear.
