Just because you don't feel it doesn't mean blockages aren't starting to build in your arteries.

"I think for the heart, we always think of it as the engine, and the arteries are the fuel lines," said Dr. Tony Kawa, a cardiologist with St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital.  "We want to make sure the fuel lines are as open as they can be."

Using high tech tools like ultrasound, the St. John Providence heart and vascular screening tests your blood flow from head to toe.

"If you have these other methods of screening, you can pick up vascular problems before they affect your heart," Kawa said.

We know blockages in the heart can be deadly, but the truth is you can start showing signs of plaque buildup much earlier in places like your carotid artery in the neck, which supplies blood to the brain.

Who needs the screening?  Anyone with a family history of heart disease, men over 45, women over 55, or anyone with high blood pressure or high cholesterol.  It's not covered by insurance and costs $75.  It takes about an hour and includes seven simple tests.

All the numbers end up in your risk profile, so you know exactly what you need to do to make necessary changes and protect yourself.

"It gives you valuable information that you can take to your doctor and get good direction to help improve things that would decrease your chance of heart attack [or] stroke," Kawa said.
