PHOENIX -

The judge set her bond at $1 million and prosecutors asked for that high amount, saying they believe she would hurt her other eight children if she gets out.

Nina Koistinen is accused of suffocating her baby girl, telling investigators she was jealous of her husband spending too much time with the baby.  Maya Hope Koistinen was only six days old.

"Nina suffers from bipolar, schizophrenia and depression and we have tried for years and years to manage it," said Nina's husband, Brad Koistinen.  He is also the baby's father.

Brad defended his wife in front of a judge Friday morning.  He doesn't believe she suffocated the baby.  He believes she accidentally smothered Maya.  This happened in their home near 56th Street and Thunderbird.

"She has been the greatest mother.  We've been married 15 years to our kids and never has hurt any of our kids," he said.

But police say Nina told detectives she pinched Maya's nose, then twisted, suffocated and smothered her -- because she had too many kids.

"The timeline of this doesn't make sense at all.  I was the one who found the baby and this doesn't make sense at all," said Brad.

Child Protection Services has investigated the family before, according to records.  Months ago, Nina told them she wanted to smother some of her kids.  She also made statements about causing a car crash because she wanted her children to go to heaven.  Still, her husband believes her confession to killing Maya is a lie and only happened because she's confused and in a fragile mental state.

"She's been mixed up before where she thinks I'm God.. when she's not on her medication.  Things aren't right and she needs serious mental help," said Brad.
