She's accused of misusing nearly $280,000. Now property owners and renters are trying to track down the Maricopa real estate broker they trusted with their money.
This real estate broker was issued a cease and desist order Monday. Property owners say she's been pocketing money from renters for at least one month.
Renters are worried they will lose thousands in security deposits.
"I feel cheated. I feel robbed," says Tina McFadden.
Renter Tina McFadden is dealing with the fact that her $1,200 security deposit is gone.
"To find out $300,000 is just missing, I can't comprehend that… the money in a trust account and you are a broker."
McFadden rents a property managed by Dawn Anderson and Maricopa Properties LLC. A cease and desist order issued this week by the Arizona Department of Real Estate alleges she and her company had outstanding trust liabilities of about $280,000.
It also states that Anderson mixed operating and personal expenses -- citing transactions at a resort in Hawaii and a hotel in New Orleans.
"I know she's lost the April payment, security deposits," says Leonard Nickens.
Leonard Nickens has reached out to Anderson on behalf of his mom, a property owner.
"We've already been contacting our renters saying, don't send your payments to Dawn, cause initially she said yeah keep sending payments til June. We said no, send ‘em to us," he says.
The order also says that Anderson didn't tell her clients that she was hiring her husband Chad and the company she was a principle of -- CA Handyman Services LLC -- to work on the properties.
"Deceived, and the fact that they're not licensed contractors, I don't want people coming into my home and doing work when they're not qualified to do it," says McFadden.
The order also said that Anderson has shown not to be a person of honesty, truthfulness and good character.
Anderson did not respond to our phone calls and emails. She has 30 days to file an appeal.
