Pharmacist Robbed, Shot In Society Hill, Police Say

PHILADELPHIA -

A man is in the hospital after police say a robbery led to gunfire overnight in Society Hill.

Shots rang out just before ten last night in the area of Fourth and Pine streets.

Police say the man, who FOX 29 News has learned is a local CVS pharmacist, was shot in the shoulder and rushed to the hospital, where he's in critical but stable condition.

"It appears that robbery was the motive. This male was robbed and shot on the highway," Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

"He was shot once, I believe, right up in this area here," said a nearby resident, pointing to his upper left chest.

The resident heard a loud pop and thought someone had been shot. "Unfortunately, we've heard that sound too often in our neighborhood," he said.

It's a very friendly street, and a lot of neighbors came out to talk try and help, talk with the victim and help keep him calm.

There was a shooting right on a nearby corner in November 2011, and a fatal shooting not far away at Fourth and Lombard.

"It's just horrible, horrible," the neighbor said. "It's a beautiful neighborhood, but we just can't stand it that there's this kind of violence happening. And, obviously, there's violence all throughout the city. So, we're not alone in this. But you always hate to see it, no matter where it happens, and we're seeing it here."

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video. They're looking for a man in a hooded sweatshirt who stands about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

He was last seen running south on Lawrence Street.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported live with more details Tuesday morning at the scene in Society Hill.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
