Delco Parents Voice Frustration, Anger Over Safety At High School

DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. -

Penn Wood High School Cyprus school officials heard from frustrated and frightened parents concerned about bomb threats and an arson at their kid's school.

"I personally am not going to continue to put a gun to my son's head like a Russian roulette sending him here. No one is giving answers as to what's being done to mitigate this issue," said Roxanne Norman whose son is a senior.

She is one of many angry, frustrated and frightened parents who packed Penn Wood High School Cyprus Campus Tuesday to vent to officials.

Norman asked district officials, "How serious did we take this when the initial calls came in?"

The William Penn School District called the meeting. It's in response to several bomb threats dating back to February against the Penn Wood High School Cyprus Campus and an arson at the school's Green Avenue Campus. That fire has shut down the school for the rest of the year.

"We are doing all that we can do to ensure everyone's safety but we all know schools are not safe places. They never have been," Superintendent Joe Bruni said. His comment shocked many parents, who complained about poor communication from the district on emergencies.

"The school certainly has my number. I never received a call."

Others say they don't like how students are now forced to go a half day to school on different shifts based on grade level while the Green Avenue campus is shut down. It leaves them with idle time while parents are at work.

"These classes that get out at 10:50 a.m. or  11:00, what are you going to do with these kids after that?" asked one parent. Another warned, "do you know how many children are already planning, how many pregnancies are going to come up or how many crimes you are allowing to be committed?"

But the most compelling comment came from a student who said, "obviously, it's not safe enough because we're still getting bomb threats. I don't feel safe. I'm scared."

The reward for information leading to an arrest was $2,000 from the district and a concerned citizen. Two state officials upped it during the meeting, bringing the reward now to $15,000.

    Cooler and drier air moves in today but the heat and humidity return for the second half of the holiday weekend.
