Couples hiring photographers to capture baby's birth

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Most couples pay big bucks to hire a professional photographer to capture the excitement of their wedding day. Now, growing number of couples are doing the same thing for their baby's birth.

Birth photographers capture everything: the nerves, the pain, the tears. They're right there to document one of the most private, emotional and exhilarating days of your life.

Mandi and Paul Oeland hired professional photographer Sarah Wise for the births of their twins at DeKalb Medical Women's Center.

"It didn't surprise me one bit.  She would hire a photographer to document breakfast, I think, if she had the chance," said Paul Oeland.

For, Mandi, a professional photographer, ringing Sarah into the picture made sense.

"For us, this was really no different than a day like our wedding day. It's something that's changing the rest of our lives and I definitely wanted to document every bit of it," she said.

Sarah has photographed about 20 births, snapping between 600 and 900 photos each time.

Because the Oeland's birth is a C-section, she doesn't shoot the surgery, but she's there as the babies are rolled out of the operating room, and there as Paul meets his daughters and there for the twins' first cries.

"It's just a really neat, life-changing moment, and to be able to capture that on film is just amazing," Wise said.

Aiden Reyes' parents, stationed at Fort Benning, wanted to share his birth with their family back home in Texas, so they asked Brittany Mudd to photograph it. Even the hard parts.

"I want be a fly on the wall, basically.  I want to get everything, that, they, the mother misses," Mudd said.

Convincing Aidan's dad, Justin – an Army drill sergeant -- to share something so private with a stranger took some work, but he came around.

In the delivery room, Ashley figured he'd be stoic.

"In front of other people, he hides his emotions and I thought he was going to do that," Ashley Reyes said.

Instead, Justin couldn't stop smiling.  And Ashley couldn't stop crying.

Brittany's photos are so filled with emotion, they might make even drill sergeants a little weepy.

"She made us a slide show and I constantly keep looking at it. It makes me cry, still. It's amazing how she put it all together," Ashley said.

"It like makes me emotional, too, like, I'll tear up when the baby is born. It's the sweetest thing ever to see a baby come into the world," Mudd said.

Paul and Mandi Oeland are getting to know their twins, Sophia Patricia and Delia Mavey. They're grateful that by sharing their story, they can relive the gift of this day.

Birth photographer is a little less expensive than wedding photographer. You can expect to pay anywhere from $500  to $1,200, depending on the photographer.

If you’re a pet owner, you’ve probably been there. You lean down to say hello and, before you know it, your dog has planted a big wet one right on your mouth. But a UGA Vet says that “kiss” may come with a downside.
