Northbound I-476 Reopens After Deadly Head-On Crash

Updated:
BROOMALL, Pa. -

Pennsylvania State Police say an early-morning crash on the Blue Route involving two vehicles, one of which was going the wrong way, killed two people.

CHECK: Latest Traffic Reports

The northbound lanes of Interstate 476 were closed for about three-and-a-half hours Friday morning from exit 5, which is U.S. Route 1, up to exit 9, or Pennsylvania Route 3, in Broomall, Delaware County.

The two-car collision involving an Oldsmobile Royale, operated by a Philadelphia man, and a Chevy Venture minivan, driven by a Delaware City, Del., woman, occurred near Lawrence Road around 3 a.m.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported from the scene during "Good Day" that the damage made it appear to be a head-on collision.

State police later confirmed that, saying it was the Oldsmobile that was headed the wrong way and struck the northbound minivan.

The identities of the deceased drivers have not been released.

Two northbound tractor-trailers then swerved when they came up on the scene moments later and hit some of the debris. The truck drivers were not hurt.

Just after 6:30 a.m., Keeley reported that vehicles stuck behind the wreck for hours were allowed past the crash scene. Around 6:50, SkyFOX showed the first cars being allowed past the Route 1 ramp and up the highway.

FOX 29's Kacie McDonnell has been explaining all morning long how to get around the traffic tie-ups.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
