A mother and father are behind bars -- facing murder and child abuse charges in connection with the death of their own son.

It started early in the morning Wednesday at the couple's apartment near 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road -- their little boy wet his bed, so 24-year-old Darnell Moses Alvarez struck the child multiple times with a belt.

The boy's mother, 21-year-old Davieanna Marlena Blake, didn't stop Alvarez and went to work, but while she was gone, it appears the abuse continued.

When Blake returned home from work, court documents show the child wasn't breathing.

"It makes me sick that parents would do that," said Lauren Toler, who lives nearby.

Toler's husband saw police and paramedics outside the apartment trying to save the 2-year-old.

"There was a mother on the phone and she was just pacing back and forth talking and the father was sitting down crying and the paramedics kept trying to resuscitate the child.  They kept loosing him and trying to get him back," she said.

The autopsy revealed the child had a lacerated liver, internal bleeding, and multiple bruising throughout his body.

A witness even told police he heard the child being spanked and felt the discipline was excessive.

Alvarez confessed to everything, telling police it was his fault.  He was booked on murder charges.  Blake was booked on a murder charge too, even though it appears she didn't hit the child.

"She obviously had some knowledge of this abuse. Didn't do anything about it.  She got home, was aware of additional abuse throughout the day, didn't do anything about it. The child was in need of medical attention.. didn't do anything about it," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

According to those court documents, the boy's father told Blake not to inform the police because Child Protective Services would be called.

Police say Alvarez has a history of domestic violence.  His bond was set a $500,000.  Blake's was set at $250,000.
