PVC pipes staking West mine claims killing birds

Updated:

ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Wildlife officials and conservationists in Nevada say they are making progress knocking down the white plastic pipes that miners traditionally have used to stake their claims but can also become death traps for small birds that get stuck inside.

The Bureau of Land Management estimates there are more than 3.4 million of the white PVC pipes staking claims across the western United States - more than 1 million in Nevada alone in a 2011 survey.

The pipes have been outlawed in Nevada since 2009.

Darin Schroeder of the American Bird Conservancy estimates the markers kill more than 1 million birds annually.

He told the Elko Daily Free Press small birds mistake the openings for a nesting cavity then are unable to climb the smooth walls to get out.
