PHOENIX -

After a mother and her two children were hit by a vehicle, the woman jumped into a bystander's car and tracked the driver down on Sunday.

Police say a woman and her children, ages 2 and 5, were walking in a crosswalk near 37th Avenue and Camelback when a car hit all three of them.

As the vehicle attempted to get away, officers say the mother jumped into a nearby car and followed the vehicle to a home near 47th Avenue and Oregon.

"There were several friends of the victim, they rushed over here and took the kids. They called the fire department right away," said Phoenix Police Lt. Emilien Sapon.

The kids were transported to a hospital in critical condition, but are expected to be okay.

Police arrested the driver and are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a factor.

The mother allegedly smashed a metal trash can into a fire truck windshield at some point during the incident. She may face criminal charges for the damage.
