Tour the USS Midway

Posted: Updated:

It's one of the most popular tourist destinations in San Diego and you can actually get a feel for what it's like to be a sailor.

A United States Navy aircraft carrier is a symbol of power that can defend us in battle and most often, ensure the peace.

Proudly and silently guarding San Diego's Embarcadero, the U.S.S. Midway stands tall with a rich history of protecting American's liberties.

The Midway was born at the end of World War II and served an unprecedented 47 years.

Up until 1955, she was the largest ship in the world and the first U.S. warship too big to go through the Panama Canal.

She saw action in the Vietnam War and was the Persian Gulf flagship in 1991's Operation Desert Storm.

The Midway was decommissioned in 1992 and is now a floating museum and open for the whole family to visit.

Named after the important battle in World War II, the Midway, designated as Warship 41, meaning she was the 41st aircraft carrier to be built by the Navy, is just huge -- a thousand feet long -- about the length of three football fields and about 20 stories high, weighing 70,000 tons.
