Gov. Chris Christie has lap band surgery - Fox 2 News Headlines

Chris Christie wanted to keep lap band surgery secret

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has undergone lap-band stomach surgery in an attempt to lose a significant amount of weight.

The governor's spokesman says Christie wanted to slim down for the sake of his wife and children.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday in Newark, Christie said his weight will have nothing to do with whether he decides to run for president.

Christie told the NY Post that he's "struggled with this issue for 20 years.... this is about turning 50 ... wanting to be there for them."

The operation took place on Feb. 16 and Christie registered under a false name, according to the Post.

It is not clear where the surgery took place but Dr. George Fielding of the NYU Medical Center Weight Management Program performed the procedure.

Christie has been the center of jokes because of his weight. Estimates are he weighed 300- 350 pounds before the operation.

Lap-band surgery involves placing a band around the stomach, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten.

Christie has reportedly dropped 40 pounds in about three months.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
