Mount Clemens school district closes buildings after MRSA cases

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (WJBK) -

A suburban Detroit school district has closed buildings for the day after two employees were diagnosed with MRSA.

The Mount Clemens Community School District says in a posting on its website that its buildings will be closed on Tuesday.

Methicillin-resistant staph is a contagious bacterial infection that's resistant to many commonly used antibiotics. Superintendent Dr. Deborah Wahlstrom confirmed Tuesday that a teacher and an aide at Mount Clemens High School had MRSA.

Wahlstrom says one of the aide was on one of the district's buses Monday. "We needed to clean all of our buses so in light of that, we needed to close the whole district."

Sanitation efforts for the district's facilities and buses are planned.

School buildings are expected to reopen on Wednesday.
