Bike Share program faces lawsuit over rack locations

MYFOXNY.COM -

The controversial bike share program is expected to begin on Memorial Day weekend, but there are opponents who want the locations for some of the rent-a-bike racks moved elsewhere.

The Citi Bike program is facing a slew of lawsuits including one from residents of 99 Bank St. in the West Village who say the street is narrow and the racks are taking up too much space.

Jeffrey Barr, a lawyer representing 99 Bank St., says the rack will result in bike riders using the sidewalk.

"It takes up half the block and because it's in the street, and because the traffic flow is against the direction that you would have to travel to get to the bike share station, you'll have to use the sidewalk. The sidewalk there is only 10 feet wide," said Barr.

Steve Vaccaro, an attorney who has been instrumental in bringing the bike share program to NYC, says there is no reason for concern.

"Before the bike station was there, there were cars parked there. There is no safety concern here. That's why the judge tossed the lawsuit by Mr. Barr's clients," said Vaccaro.

I started at the Improv, no longer here, and he was a fan. I was drinking back then and I said 'I hate you.' We had a fistfight at a bar and we bonded. We love each other and yet we annoy each other," said Lewis. The pair was quite the comedic duo on the hit HBO show.
