GAINESVILLE, Ga. -
Police tell FOX 5 a standoff with an armed man at Gainesville motel ended with a suspect taken into custody safely. They say the man barricaded himself inside one of the rooms earlier Tuesday, and at one point, he fired shots at officers outside.
The situation unfolded at a Motel 6 located off of U.S. Highway 129 at Monroe Drive. Police evacuated the surrounding rooms and area, and also shut down nearby streets as a precaution after getting calls about a resident being armed and dangerous.
"We just received a call from a family member that something was not right about him and we needed to follow up on it, and they were concerned about his well-being," said Cpl. Joe Britte of the Gainesville Police Department.
Just before noon, police said shots were fired at officers from the room. No officers were hit by the gunfire. Then, just before 1 p.m., police confirmed to FOX 5 that the suspect had been taken into custody safely. He was taken to the Hall County Detention Center.
"It ended with our negotiators really talking him down, really bringing him down to reality. He surrendered. He surrendered peacefully," Britte said.
Police identified the suspect at 31-year-old Justin Talton.
Authorities have charged Talton with reckless conduct and criminal damage to property. More charges are pending.
