MESA, Ariz. -

A fire ripped through one local organization's building, hindering their ability to feed the homeless. But today employees who called for help are recognized.

The Mesa Fire Department is thanking the two good Samaritans for acting quickly. The fire could have been much worse if it wasn't for these two individuals

Paz de Cristo lost its ability to feed the homeless after a fire spread from a nearby storage area to the kitchen in late March.

For at least 2 weeks, the building was shut down. The kitchen had to be remodeled. Now, these individuals are being called Good Samaritans for helping save what was left.

"Called 911 and we just tried to turn off the fire," says Marcial Verdejo.

"I figured Marcial could use the fire extinguisher and I could use the blankets so we started doing that I gave him the extinguisher and he started putting the fire down," says Elidia Beltran.

They were working at the non-profit the day the fire started. Mesa Fire department says, if it wasn't for their swift action, it could have been much worse.

"The fire department, the police department, public safety, when you meet people who want to help in the community and you bring the partnership together it makes for an excellent community," says Mesa Fire spokesman Forrest Smith.

"I think I was doing what I had to do coming in here I never thought coming in here, receiving an award for something I had to do," says Beltran.

Paz de Cristo provides evening meals and food boxes to the homeless and the working poor in the east valley.
