DeKalb schools to address alleged harassment

ATLANTA (AP) - The federal government has reached a settlement agreement with the DeKalb County School District over alleged harassment of a Sikh middle school student.

The settlement was announced Tuesday and will be in effect through the end of the 2014-15 school year. It requires the school district to work with a consultant to develop and implement anti-harassment training that addresses religious and national origin bias at the student's middle and high school.

It also requires the district to immediately implement a safety plan for the student and to respond quickly and effectively to future incidents.

The Sikh Coalition had filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of the student alleging he had been verbally and physically harassed because of his faith.
