Cab Driver Slain In West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA -

A cab driver picking up a fare was gunned down overnight on the streets of West Philadelphia. Now, police are searching for the shooter.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. on the 6000 block of Walnut Street. Police say robbery appears to be the motive.

No arrests have been made.

The 33-year-old driver, who worked for All City Taxi, was sprayed with bullets, shot repeatedly in the upper body and arm, police said.

"What we believe has happened here is that the cab driver goes to pick up a fare, is flagged down outside the apartment house here," police Lt. John Walker, of the Southwest Detectives, said. "We believe that person attempts to rob the cab driver, and that person never makes it into the car. We believe the cab driver hits the gas, losing control of the vehicle.

"It's really sad. For a few dollars to kill people, that's really sad," said the cabbie's supervisor.

FOX 29's Dawn Timmeney was live at police headquarters Wednesday morning with the latest in the above video report.
