5 Year Old Recovering from Hit and Run

Just a couple weeks after the city began a new crackdown on illegal dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles, a North Philadelphia boy is seriously injured  by a hit and run driver on a dirt bike Sunday afternoon in Hunting Park.

Joaquin Hernandez, 5  remains in the intensive care unit at St. Christopher's Hospital with a broken collarbone, 5 broken ribs and a spinal injury.

"He hit him so hard that he hit the car  in front of mine..from there he bounced to the street" said Joaquin's mother Keyla Colon.

Tonight his family and Philadelphia Police are trying to find the driver.

Family video shows the little boy playing in Hunting Park late Sunday afternoon. His mother says the family was just packing up to go home when 3 men on dirt bikes came speeding through the park on the grass. One of the drivers collided with the little boy sending his body flying into the street.  None of the drivers stopped.

"He's a coward. You are going to leave a 5 year old thrown the street?" said Colon.

A good Samaritan took Joaquin to the hospital emergency room as his mother tried to keep him conscious.  Police with Accident Investigations released a picture of a red and white dirt bike they believe looks like the one involved.

The problem of illegal dirt bikes and ATV's speeding through city streets are an ongoing problem in Philadelphia. City Council just enacted a new ordinance making it easier for police to confiscate illegal dirt bikes. A new rule that didn't help this family.

"Stop running in the streets. Stop driving in the street. There's kids out here. Imagine.  I give thanks that my son he's hurt but he's alive" said Colon.

Now instead of attending his kindergarten graduation, going to his karate class or little league games Joaquin will now spend the next month in the hospital while the person responsible for him being here is still out there.

Police don't have a good description of the suspect on the dirt bike but they are confident someone out there who was in Hunting Park Sunday afternoon about 5pm--knows this man believed to be from the neighborhood.
