Illinois FOID card backlog frustrates potential gun owners

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Illinois state police said they have a backlog of tens of thousands of applications for FOID cards, and can't keep up with the number of people applying to buy and own guns legally in the state.

The agency received more than 28,000 applications for firearms owner identification cards in April, on top of a backlog of nearly 76,000 applications. The card is one of the state's prerequisites to own a firearm.

The State Journal-Register reports that state law requires Illinois state police to approve or deny applications within 30 days. But state officials said the FOID department is understaffed and dealing with the flood of applications.

The agency said their system is antiquated and they need more resources to process FOID cards.

Applicants are upset the wait is much longer than the law requires, and spoke with FOX 32 News to voice their frustration Thursday.
