Let It Rip: The Issue of Sexual Slavery

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

It is the story captivating the nation.  Three Cleveland women kidnapped a decade ago were found alive.  Now we're learning more of their horrific story, all of them treated as slaves.

But stories like this are all too common across the country, including right here in metro Detroit.

"Human trafficking is a very serious issue in the United States.  I think a lot of people don't realize that Detroit has such a serious issue with human trafficking," said Lieutenant Mike Shaw with Michigan State Police.

This week on "Let It Rip," we take a closer look into the dangerous world of sexual slavery and what can be done to stop it.

Joining Huel Perkins and Charlie Langton on our panels are:

Malynda Jennings, a woman who knows first hand the ordeal those women in Cleveland went through.  She was just six years old when members of her own family forced her into sexual slavery.

Julia McGowen, a graduate student at Oakland University who has studied the problem.  She says abuse and exploitation of young women is rampant across the country, including here in Detroit.  She also works with The Hope Project.

Dr. Gearld Shiener, a psychiatrist.

Andrew Arena, the former Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Detroit.  He now heads the Detroit Crime Commission.

And Andrea Isom, the award winning reporter who just uncovered a sex ring in metro Detroit this week.

Click on the videos above to watch this week's edition of "Let It Rip."  Then post your thoughts in the "Comments" section below.

Plus, in the third video, Charlie Langton takes "Let It Rip" on the road where he found out what people would pick if they could choose between overtime pay or time off.

Finally, help is available for women trapped in human trafficking.  You can find more information at traffickingresourcecenter.org or you can call the Detroit FBI at (313) 965-2323.
