Trenton Standoff Victim Shares Story

Posted: Updated:
TRENTON, N.J. -

The 37-hour standoff ended with four flashbangs, then law enforcement officers storming into a two story Trenton home on Grand.

Their aim, to save three children taken hostage by 38-year-old Gerald Tyrone Murphy.

"A single shot was fired to stop a threatening action made against one of he kids by Murphy," explained Colonel Rick Fuentes. "He was wounded."

Murphy died from his wound.  His girlfriend's Carmelita Stevens' two teenage girls and 4-year-old son were rescued.

Authorities say there are allegations the girls were assaulted and abused.

A preliminary investigation indicates Stevens and her 13-year-old son were killed two weeks ago.

Their decomposing bodies were still in the home when Trenton Police made a welfare check at the house Friday afternoon, sparking the standoff.

"I can't believe what he did to my mom like that," said Jovan Stevens.

Steven's is Carmelita's 19-year-old son who has autism.

For weeks he was unaware of the mayhem upstairs. Police rescued him Friday.

He says Murphy told him his mom was  on vacation and to stay in the basement. Authorities

say he was there for about two weeks. Jovan says he passed the time with his "art and playing video games."

Murphy has a violent criminal history according to the Mercer County Prosecutor. It includes robbery and a warrant for failing to register as a sex offender.

Carmelita's cousin Sonja Kelly says she always had a bad feeling about Murphy. Now she knows why.

"My cousin is so sweet unfortunately she was  open to new people and

gullible to this monster."

Kelly says her cousin is recently divorced and moved to Trenton from Miami.

Police haven't released a motive, but Kelly  believes Stevens was trying to get Murphy out of her house after he'd moved in within a month or two of them dating.
