Westwood HS teams get donation from Phoenix Suns

It's a pretty low crime. Stealing $5,000 worth of basketball equipment from Westwood High School.

But the students didn't let the theft get them down. Instead, they stepped up their volunteer work, and today won a special visit from the Phoenix Suns.

There's a very special guest at the high school assembly. The Phoenix Suns are helping brighten up the day at Westwood High School.

With student-teacher competitions, games and giveaways, the Suns donated $5,000 in sports equipment after the thieves stole all their gear this past year.

"It happened over a break and we just handed out all the equipment to the basketball players," says Richard Long, Westwood High Junior Varsity Basketball Coach. "Mostly jerseys, sweats, bags, shooting shirts, a bunch of gear."

"It's the grand finale, it's the grand champion, Westwood High School, not only because of their basketball situation but because of what these kids have done within the community," says Tim Kempton, Suns Alumnus and Color Commentator.

The assembly is one of celebration in many ways. Both the boy and girls have volunteered in their communities -- one of the requirements for being considered for the donation.

"This whole thing is great because it just happened so it allows me to replace equipment and make a few upgrades," says Long.

"It hits close to home. My kids play in the high schools, to see it go right back to the community because the kids are involved in the community is pretty special," says Kempton.

Westwood's varsity girls and boys basketball teams were chosen as this year's CenturyLink "Team Assist" winner -- all because of their dedication to the community and volunteer work.
