Specialty camps allow kids to sharpen skills

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Parents, if you haven't found just the right summer camp for your child, fear not. We've checked around and found some affordable camps with openings. Better yet, these camps give your child a chance to sharpen specific skills.

You have options when it comes to choosing a summer camp for your kids. But if you choose Young Masterminds of Atlanta, be warned – it's not all play.

"We're very honest with parents, and tell them this is not a day camp, they're not playing all summer," said Archie McEachern of Young Masterminds of Atlanta.

McEachern and Shatavia Elder, the founders of Young Masterminds, say they'll have a ball. It's a specialty camp. Instead of providing a day long agenda of general activities, kids will spend the day concentrating on a specific set of skills.

"We teach entrepreneurship as well as financial literacy, communicative protocol and personal development. So every youngster that comes in our hands will have an opportunity to open a small business from beginning to end," said Elder.

Honing a specific skill is something the city of Atlanta believes in also.

"At Adams Park, we have our basketball camp. At Central Park we have our all sports camp. At Coen park we have our special needs camp," said Jennifer Ogunsola with the City of Atlanta.

At Washington Park, it's swimming, tennis and golf. The city says it's all an effort to expose kids to a variety of different activities.

While camps can be an expensive proposition, these camps are affordable. Young Masterminds ranges from $100 to $150 a week. The city's camps are $35 a week for residents and $110 for non- residents.

"They have a good time because they're learning these different things. What kid doesn't love money," said Elder.

In addition to shirts and field trips, most specialty camps also include snacks and lunch. For more information on specialty camps, click the links below:
