LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) -

John Garcia had a surprise for his prom date and girlfriend of two years, Juliette Lundberg.

Garcia is a student intern with McMahon Helicopters in Canton. He asked the pilots there if he could get a lift to the prom in a chopper. They said why not.

Garcia told Lundberg let's get our prom pictures taken in front of a helicopter. She thought they were there only for pictures, but then Garcia told her they were going to prom in a chopper.

Garcia and Lundberg are both second lieutenants in the Civil Air Patrol. Lundberg has been at the controls of a Cessna, but had never been in a chopper before now.

Garcia kept it all a secret.

"She kept asking like, oh, what are we doing for prom? Are we having a limo? I've never been in a limo. I was like, yeah, you know, we're getting a limo. And then I told her, you know, we're just coming here to get pictures with the helicopter and then surprised her," he said.

Pilot Russ fired up the chopper for the ten minute flight to the Livonia Franklin High prom at Laurel Manor on Schoolcraft.

"It was awesome," Lundberg said. "It was amazing. It was so beautiful."

"It was definitely worth it, every second. It was nice. Just her reaction was priceless," Garcia said.

The city of Detroit says workers and retirees have approved pension cuts, a crucial step to emerging from the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The city reported results Monday after two months of balloting ended July 11. A judge still must hold a trial to determine if Detroit's overall bankruptcy plan is fair and feasible, but support from retirees is vital.
