CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The $1 billion reconstruction of the CTA Red Line's south branch begins Sunday. Crews will begin shutting down the nine affected stations about 2 a.m. on Sunday.

The five month rehab of the 40-year-old rail line between Cermak/Chinatown and the 95th/Dan Ryan stop will include the replacement of track beds, ties, rail and drainage systems.

The 80,000 commuters who use the South Side Red Line will have a couple of alternatives: They can use the green line or CTA shuttle buses added to existing South Side routes.
