MESA, Ariz. -

Homeowners are wondering how a second suspect could've hid in their house for five hours after the first suspect was arrested.

When a stolen truck crashed through the side of a Mesa home, officers arrived to arrest the driver. They found him about an hour after the initial crash. But a second suspect managed to hide out inside that closet in the home for 5 hours.

The homeowners want to know how police missed her.

Today, work crews are busy cleaning up the damage at this Mesa home, one day after a stolen truck came crashing through the side.

But the biggest surprise for the homeowners, George and Laura Simpson, was that this woman -- Veronica Gallegos, a passenger in the truck – was hiding in a closet.

"Believe me I love the police and I know they have a tough job to do -- but this was so unprofessional -- I just can't believe it. I'm still in shock," says resident George Simpson.

George Simpson recently had surgery and had to be taken to the hospital as a precaution.

His wife Linda had a brief encounter with the woman when she was found.

"And all I said to her was -- I hope for your sake my husband isn't dead," says Laura Simpson.

"I'm not sure how long she planned on staying there but she had been there a good five hours," says TK Stratton.

TK Stratton, owner of Stratton Restoration, was surveying the damage with a supervisor when they spotted the woman hiding.

"She didn't want us to tell anyone. She didn't know who to call or what to say, and so we knew we knew we had to call police and let ‘em know," says Stratton.

Mesa PD are now looking into how this happened.

"Do we take notice of things like this? Absolutely. Do we learn from them, absolutely. We can always update, change evaluate our procedures to make sure these things don't happen. And we will certainly do that in this case as we would any other case," says Mesa Police Sgt. Steve Berry.
