School Kidnapping Victim's Family To Sue City, District

Posted: Updated:

Four months after surveillance cameras caught her being lead away from the Bryant Elementary School by her kidnapper, the family of the 5-year-old kindergartner abducted in broad daylight is now planning on suing the city and the school district.

"What happened here was every parent's nightmare," attorney Tom Kline told Fox 29. "The school district failed in just about every way."

The announcement came from the family's attorney as evidence was turned over in court Monday to 20-year-old Christina Regusters' defense lawyer. She was indicted on charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and indecent sexual assault.

"The school district failed this little girl just miserably," Kline claimed.

While the criminal case against Regusters moves ahead, Kline is pressing a civil suit claiming security at Bryant Elementary was lax and lead to the little girl being abducted right out of her classroom.

"They allowed a stranger to come into a school, to abduct a child, then walk through without appropriate security measures, walk out in broad daylight. Without proper identification," Kline said.

Parents say school security has improved dramatically since the kidnapping.

"You want to be sure, absolutely positive, that when you come back to pick them up. They are where you left them," the grandmother of one student told reporters.

Kline and Regusters' attorney believe more suspects were involved in the kidnapping. The little girl was blindfolded, held under a bed for 20 hours, sexually assaulted, then left at a local park in the rain the next morning.

"We believe full justice will not be achieved until every person involved is brought to justice," Kline added.

School district officials declined to comment on the pending litigation. Dramatic changes have been made to security at the school since this incident. Regusters remains behind bars on $4 million bail. No trial date has been set.

District Attorney Seth Williams has said publicly that the investigation is continuing.
